Inspired by her own journey from rock bottom to recovery, Ash Butterss started this podcast to smash the stigma out of mental health, trauma and addiction.
After burning her life to the ground and ending up in rehab, she knows what it takes to rebuild, and how much is possible on the other side. Each week, Ash is joined by guests who’ve overcome adversity, so you can hear what recovery really looks like, feel less alone and walk away with ideas you can use.
Because when we recover loudly, no one need suffer in silence.

Ash Butterss | Podcaster | Transformation Coach | TEDx Speaker | Bachelor of Communication (Journalism)
Ash started Behind the Smile two years into her own recovery because she wasn’t hearing the honest conversations she needed.
Seeing herself in other people’s stories helped her heal, so now she shares conversations about overcoming adversity every week, along with practical tips for looking after your mental, physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing as you build a life in recovery.
Graduating with honours and a degree in journalism, Ash isn't afraid to ask the real questions, because she comes from a place of lived experience. Her intention is that you find hope in these stories and take away tools you can use in your own life.
